Applying Appreciative Inquiry & Positive Psychology to Improve Your Evaluation Practice

Event Date: 2024-07-25 TEI Deadline: 2024-07-22

Early work in embedding Appreciative Inquiry/Appreciative evaluation is known for its intentionality in crafting compelling questions about successful experiences, inviting affirming multi-stakeholder engagement, generating insightful stories about lived experience, and grounding the evaluation in a compelling vision of the future. Twenty years later, research in positive psychology has shown that the contribution of Appreciative Evaluation and other positive psychology tools center around the attention it offers to the intrapersonal experience and user experience (UX) of those engaged in evaluation – evaluation managers, evaluators, participants, commissioners, and other interested parties. When individuals engaged in evaluation and have a productive and constructive experience, they are more likely to use and embrace evaluation as an opportunity for reflection, learning, improvement, and transformation.

Utilization-Focused Evaluation

Event Date: 2024-07-26 TEI Deadline: 2024-07-23

Utilization-Focused Evaluation begins with the premise that evaluations should be judged by their utility and actual use; therefore, evaluators should facilitate the evaluation process and design any evaluation with careful consideration of how everything that is done, from beginning to end, will affect use. Use concerns how real people in the real world apply evaluation findings and experience the evaluation process. Therefore, the focus in utilization-focused evaluation is on the intended use by intended users.
