Ten key disruptions in 2024

Policy Horizons Canada is the Government of Canada’s centre of excellence in foresight. In 2024, it published a report entitled Disruptions on the Horizon which explores possible disruptions and anticipates potential future scenarios. From this analysis, Policy Horizons Canada concludes that the top ten disruptions, those that have the highest combined likelihood and impact, are:

1. People cannot tell what is true and what is not.
2. Biodiversity is lost and ecosystems collapse.
3. Emergency response is overwhelmed.
4. Cyberattacks disable critical infrastructure.
5. Billionaires run the world.
6. Artificial intelligence runs wild.
7. Vital natural resources are scarce.
8. Downward social mobility is the norm.
9. Healthcare systems collapse.
10. Democratic systems breakdown.
