Title: Developmental Evaluation
Abstract: Much has been learned since the first edition of Developmental Evaluation was published in 2011. A new 2nd edition will be published in 2026 reflecting how times have changed both in the world at large and in evaluation. . The largest developmental evaluation ever undertaken has been completed in Canada. The framework in the new Developmental Evaluation book and learnings from the large-scale Canadian exemplar of developmental evaluation will be shared during this workshop, with participants having the opportunity to practice some of the processes that support Developmental Evaluation. With this experience in the context of rapidly changing and challenging times, this workshop should prepare evaluators to be better able to plan and implement credible evaluations that will make a difference, especially in support of complex systems transformations

Expertise:Michael Q. Patton introduced Developmental Evaluation through a definitive book Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use. The second edition of the book will be published in 2026. In addition to conducting Developmental Evaluations, he was the advisor to the team conducting the largest Developmental Evaluation in Canada to date. He has conducted numerous workshops and presentations.
Martha McGuire, in addition to leading a number of Developmental Evaluations, was a member of the team conducting the largest in Canada. She has conducted many workshops throughout her career and taught a virtual evaluation course at what is now Tororonto Metropolitan University.
