President's Update, September 2017

An Early Fall Update.

Things are a little slower over the summer for CES. I hope all of you had a chance to slow down as well and are now geared up for the fall season.

This is a time of transition for CES with committees and chapters changing membership and the CES e-institute platform up and ready to be populated by additional course. We have a new Director on the national Board to oversee the e-Institute – Marla Steinberg – and are planning to recruit a part time paid manager for the project.

Our Credentialed Evaluator program remains popular and our Vice President, Natalie Kishchuk has taken on her role in this with enthusiasm. Organizing the annual maintenance agenda for CEs is a current priority.

Our annual face to face board meeting is taking place in Winnipeg in October, preceded by meetings with the University and some professional development workshops for evaluators in the province organized by the Chapter. Marla will have chance to join us and meet the team. The Board has a lot of transitions this year with several Chapter terms expiring; while we will miss the current crew, I speak for the Board to say how pleased we are to welcome new representatives from Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and awaiting New Brunswick (and Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta-NWT and BC-Yukon before winter). With this turnover, the Board will select new Chairs for standing committees -- Professional Learning, Governance & Process – as well as new committee members and a Secretary to record minutes

I am attending the AEA conference in Washington along with a representative from the Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation and our Executive Director Rebecca Mellett. I hope to see many of you there. It is a chance for me to catch up with what is happening in evaluation and to promote the Calgary conference.

Benoît Gauthier our past president has been busy representing us in international circles and playing a major role in international conferences as the CES representative.

The 2018 Conference planning is well underway with an exciting "Co-Creation" theme. A conference planner has been selected and the website will be up soon – stay tuned for the call for proposals!

The monthly webinar series was kicked off with Gail Vallance Barrington, and several great topics coming up. Other initiatives to connect and support evaluators continue to be well used, and are open for more participants to sign up for the CES Mentoring Initiative!

Finally, a thank you to our volunteers and an appeal for more. One of the most rewarding things in professional life is to give back to our community of peers. At CES, we do that by volunteering for Chapters boards, for webinars, for special projects, for presentations at Chapter and National events, as peer reviewers, and other functions. Let me know if I can help you link to a coming volunteer opportunity.
