Conference organizers are working hard to ensure this year’s annual conference is a success from an environmental sustainability perspective. Our objective is to run a carbon-neutral conference, reduce and/or mitigate our overall environmental footprint, and to have a positive “handprint” on equity and sustainability in the local area. The conference venue and hotels have been chosen with sustainability in mind. For example, energy use, waste management, minimized travel and use of local and sustainable food sources were among the criteria used in selecting them.
We welcome attendees’ active involvement in supporting the C2020 sustainability values where we are promoting a range of carbon, food, and plastic footprint calculators to support delegates to make greener choices. For example, delegates are asked to bring their own reusable water bottles or travel mugs and access documents such as the conference program electronically. We are also partnering with ViaRail for a 10% discount to delegates who opt for train travel (discount code #14054).
Building on last year’s conference, an evaluation rubric is being used to address a range of greening actions. This rubric outlines actions to: a) reduce our footprint, b) offset or mitigate our unavoidable footprint, and c) to contribute to the sustainability and equity of the place where the conference is held. The greening rubric and delegate feedback will be used to assess the implementation of these greening goals. Integrated with the overall C2020 evaluation, we will report back to CES members on the results of these efforts, lessons learned and potential improvements for future conferences.
