A word from the President of the CES for 2002-2004 Thank you to our Saskatchewan Chapter for hosting the Society's last conference in Saskatoon entitled, "Evaluation: A Cooperative Enterprise". The theme was reflected in the leadership of the conference team under the chairmanship of Dr. Alan Ryan. Mark your calendar for our joint conference with the American Evaluation Association, "Crossing Borders Crossing Boundaries" held in Toronto on October 25-30, 2005. It is encouraging to see the interest in Chapters across the country for volunteering to host national conferences. Updates from our Chapter representatives show the focus and vibrancy of the local level and such willingness to share experiences and new initiatives. Thank you to all who participated in the national membership survey. Results have been reviewed and will be used for continous improvement. Thank you to the Chapters who hosted me in my Chapter outreach work in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island. Helping build human capacity for program evaluation is a keen interest of mine! I was pleased to do some advocacy work in Nunavut, as well. Sincere appreciation is extended to our 2003/2004 Council. Indeed, it was a joy to work with such a positive, skilled and selfidirected team. Our very best wishes to Nancy Porteous, Past President of CES, Lynn Bryant, Chair of Member Services, and Tracy Fiander Trask, member on the Professional Development Committee, Nova Scotia Chapter. Welcome to Lori Ebbesen, Saskatachewan Chapter, Christina Haché, Nova Scotia Chapter, and Bea Courtney, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter! We share a productive working relationship with our secretariat, Kathy Jones and The Willow Group. Benoît Gauthier, our CES web master continues to improve and show the impact of our web presence. National Council works from strategic planning and critical path frameworks. We have been able to implement more transparent succession practices, expanded the Essential Skills Series and continue to promote and upgrade the work of the Joint Standards Committee. I was honored to represent CES in the transformation review of SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada). Congratulations to Brad Cousins our Editor of the Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation, in successfully completing his second year. International development continued with Nancy Porteous' leadership in the IOCE (International Organisation for Cooperation in Evaluation). I was pleased to do some advocacy work in Budapest. I appreciated the hospitality of AEA and the positive working relationship established as we address IOCE and the joint conference. Future challenges of the CES will include more high impact strategies applied around advocacy, sponsorship, long term fiscal planning, creating new marketing frontiers and developing international opportunities. I was honoured to have served as CES President for these past two years. On behalf of CES, I express a warm welcome to Carl Doucette, new President of CES. In 2006, CES will celebrate 25 years. We have a rich history and a bright future as we come into our own locally, nationally and internationally. Gwen Keith CES President 2002-2004
